While mounting an additional cooler behind the grill is the simple option, that just adds more heat to the full system and takes away from the cooling capacity of the radiator. On top of that, most owners who track their cars will have an upgraded/larger intercooler which further compounds the issue. That means the sides of the bumper are the obvious and optimal placement. However, the FL5 does not have great airflow in that area. To improve airflow, CSF needed to design a ducting/inlet system that would allow proper airflow for optimal performance.

The original OE oil cooler from BMW is an all metal design which would make you think it would be fairly robust. However, there are several weak spots in the design that make it far less durable than it could be. The CSF design resolves these issues with more robust materials and reinforcing weak points. At first glance, the original BMW OE oil cooler appears solid due to its all-metal construction. However, design weaknesses make it far less durable than expected. The original OE oil cooler from BMW is an all metal design which would make you think it would be fairly robust. However, there are several weak spots in the design that tend to cause leaks. The CSF Race-Spec design reinforces the weak points, especially around the feed and return lines. CSF's solid line connection block can handle any abuse thrown at it while the reinforced and braced return tube is rock solid. CSF also upgraded the more fragile Tub/Fin core to a robust and durable Bar/Plate design. The core is 40% larger than the factory unit with 2 additional rows of oil cooling and much thicker core (63mm vs OE 45mm). This offers superior cooling capacity and volume for the oil system. TIG welded end tanks round out the slew of upgrades creating a much stronger connection than the factory brazed construction.

One of the goals of the CSF 911/930 Engine Oil Cooler was to have a single unit that could fit both older (65-71) and newer models (72-89). The solution may seem simple, but engineering the two upgraded stainless steel fittings so there was no oil flow restriction took some extra design work. CSF took some inspiration from the CSF 911/930 Turbo Fender Oil Cooler (CSF #8168) using a similarly designed "Widemouth Fitting". The threaded M30 "Widemouth Fitting" for the 65-71 models maintains the optimized inner diameter (ID) of the oil pipe to maximize flow through the oil system. The "Widemouth Fitting" offers 50% greater flow capacity over the OEM connection. The machined in-house Stainless Steel fittings offer increased strength and durability over the OEM Aluminum slip-on tube (72-89 models) and threaded M30 fitting (65-71 models). Both OEM connections are common sources of leaks. CSF also includes two high quality copper crush washers to offer the best possible seal and prevent any leaks.

Enter the new CSF S54 Swap Race Spec Oil Cooler. This new oil cooler is shorter on the right hand side allowing owners to run the A/C lines in the OEM path. Even though the #8240 is slightly smaller than the #8032, you can expect similar performance levels as they both feature a dual pass design with 8 cooling rows and are the same turbulated heavy-duty bar/plate construction. Both oil coolers utilize the S54 OEM oil line connections. However, CSF will be offering a fitting kit with -10 AN hookups for customers looking to run custom oil lines. This fitting kit should be available by the second quarter of 2023.

The unique design of CSF's oil cooler line has distinct advantages over conventional style oil coolers (plate-type/stacked oil coolers). The oil coolers can be placed in tighter spaces or different areas of the vehicle that don't have much vertical surface area. Longer rectangular sizes can also help with avoiding the stacking of too many coolers which may cause airflow issues to other components in the cooling system. Inlet/outlet port placement is much easier to route oil lines. Typical oil cooler lines have to be routed from different/opposite ends of the cooler often facing up or down. Usually one line has to run across from one side of the cooler to the other to then be routed together to the feed/return connection of the oil system. The CSF oil coolers are much more robust, durable, and can withstand a higher peak burst rate. This allows the cooler to be mounted in areas that might get high debris (front fascia, diff cooler, side vents, etc...). The CSF oil cooler is designed to withstand a tremendous amount of vibration and debris.
